Dogs Always Deserve a Second Chance at Life
Dogs are amazing. Their ability to persevere in the face of adversity while maintaining their boundless capacity for love is a feat few other creatures on this earth are able to balance so perfectly. As dog lovers we are always finding new, meaningful ways to be in awe of our K9 companions, regardless of what they look like, and this notion has had me thinking about a local story from Malden, MA reported across most local news networks earlier this week.
In December of last year eighteen dogs were rescued from a dilapidated home under dire conditions. Emaciated, packed into confined quarters, uncared for and sick, these dogs were neglected as living, breathing creatures and collected and used as labor for financial gain. Fortunately, this week the Animal Rescue League of Boston announced that six of these dogs had been medically rehabilitated and were ready for new homes with loving families.
Despite the grotesque circumstances that these poor dogs lived under, they are ready, willing, and able to give and receive love just as any other dog that grew up under more idyllic conditions. Many will make note that these dogs were “pitbull-like” dogs, and the sub-context there is that they deserved this sort of treatment - or at the very least that they are partially to blame for their unfortunate circumstance. These dogs are survivors. They were victims of people that put profit before compassion and their breed or appearance is irrelevant.
I’ll save you my rant on the perils of breed specific legislation and the misconceptions surrounding the term “pitbulls,” that’s for another time. For now I know that you, as dog lovers, will view this situation with all the compassion and hope that we can collectively muster. If you, a friend, or a loved one is looking for a sweet, family oriented rescue pup I strongly encourage you to reach out to the Animal Rescue League of Boston and inquire about these dogs. I have had the pleasure of rescuing two adult dogs and I can personally attest that nothing in the world feels as rewarding as giving a dog a second chance to live their best life.
Thank you so much to the compassionate, caring, and dedicated members of the Animal Rescue League of Boston and Malden Animal Control for giving these dogs a second chance at life.
